Rail Head Profile Gauge
The Rail Head Profile Gauge (RHPG) is designed for accurate measurements of the rail head transverse section. Types of rails include S 49, UIC 60 and others, as required by the customer. High accuracy of the measurements (0.02 mm) has been obtained by employing the non-contact laser measurement method and the automatic drive of the measuring probe. The gauge is delivered with a special datum beam, making it possible to take measurements of the rail head in the track.
The gauge is based on the track during the measurement cycle, using the special beam as the datum, and the measuring readings are stored in the electronic memory of the device, in which some 100 profiles may be stored.
Specifications:
- Measured paramete -
working envelope: Rmin: 20 mm;
ring thickness: 30 mm - Number of measurement files: 99
- Memory size: 512 kB
- Resolution: 0.03 mm
- Accuracy: ±0.05 mm
- Angular measurement range: 40° ÷ 270°
- Operation time when fully charged: 8 hours
- Operating conditions: -5 ÷ +45°,
humidity 15 ÷ 85% no condensation
The rotation angle of the arm with the measuring probe is about 210°, thanks to which measured surface includes not only the rail tread surface but also its both side surfaces, up to the radii connecting to the fishing surface of the rail. The angular arm travel range may be freely adjusted by the user.
Principle of operation

Thanks to this design, one can evaluate correctness of the grinding job done and also can measure wear of the rail head and changes of the mechanical properties coefficients' values. After completing the measurement data series they are transferred to the PC computer for further analysis. Extensively featured dedicated PC software makes it possible to perform many other functions as well.
This portable device may be also used at the rolling mill for process control, as well as for documenting the rail head quality during the final quality control and commissioning of rails.
